Guitar Dictionary : Terms related to guitars Part-II

The continuation of the previous guitar dictionary

capo
A mechanical barre that attaches to the neck of a guitar by means of a string, spring, elastic or nylon band, or a lever and thumbscrew arrangement. The capo can be used to raise the key of a song to suit a vocalist as well as to lower the action and shorten the string length.
chord
Three or more notes sounded simultaneously.
chorus (of a tune)
Strictly speaking, the portion of a song lyric or melody that is repeated, often with other voices joining in. In jazz improvisation, however, "playing a chorus" would mean taking a turn improvising over the tune's chords progression.
closed voicing
The term "voicing" refers to the vertical arrangement of the notes of a given chord. "Closed voicing" places the member notes as close together as possible, no matter the inversion as opposed to "open voicing" which spreads the member notes of the chord at larger intervals.
cutaway
A concave area generally in the upper right bout of a normal right-hand guitar that allows the player easier access to the high frets.
dropped-D tuning
The practice of lowering the sixth string (E) by a whole tone, one octave lower than the fourth string.
finger picks
Banjo-style picks that fingerstyle guitarists use when playing steel-string instruments.
fingerstyle
Playing with the fingernails or fingertips with or without fingerpicks as opposed to playing with a flatpick.
flatpick
A triangular or teardrop-shaped piece of nylon or plastic used to pluck or strum guitar strings. Flatpicks are available in a large variety of shapes, sizes, and thickness.
footstool
A small adjustable stool used to raise the height of the guitar.
hammer-on
A note sounded literally by "hammering" down with a left hand finger, often performed in conjunction with a note first plucked by the right hand on the same string.
harmonics
Chime-like sounds achieved in two ways: 1) natural harmonics - by touching a string at any equidistant division of the string length (typically 5th, 7th, and 12th fret), directly above the fret with left hand, and striking hard with the right-hand fingers or pick near the bridge where there is more string resistance; or 2) artificial harmonics - touching a string with the index finger of the right hand twelve frets higher than any fretted note and plucking the string with either the thumb or third finger of the right hand.
interval
The distance between two notes.
inversion
Structuring a chord with a note other than the root as the lowest note.
lead guitar
The part played by a guitar soloist in a rock band
modulate
To change keys within a piece of music
open voicing
A manner of chord construction in which the member notes are broadly separated. See closed voicing above.
pentatonic scale
A five-tone scale used often in rock.
picking
Plucking or producing a sound on the guitar in general, either with the fingers or a flatpick. Sometimes refers to playing a single-note melody line.
p i m a
letters derived from the Spanish names for the fingers of the right hand: pulgar (thumb), indice (index), medio (middle), and anular (ring). Used to indicate fingering.
plectrum
Another name for a flatpick.
positions
A reference to placement of the left hand index finger at various frets.
power chord
A chord consisting of the first (root), fifth and eighth degree (octave) of the scale. Power chords are typically used in playing rock music.
rhythm guitar
Rhythmic strumming of chord backup for a lead player, singer, or ensemble.
standard tuning
The guitar is generally tuned EADGBE low to high.
string winder
A swivel device with a handle with a fixture that fits over the tuning keys.
strumming
Performed with a pick or the fingers. Generally consists of brushing across 2-6 strings in a rhythmic up and down fashion appropriate to the tune being played.
tablature or tab
A system of writing music for fretted instruments whereby a number or letter appears on lines representing the strings, indicating the fret to be played.
transcription
To write a solo, note for note, off of a recording.
transpose
To change the key of a piece of music by a specific interval.
tremolo
A technique performed with either a very rapid down-up movement of the pick or a pami plucking of the fingers.

Guitar Dictionary : Terms related to guitars Part-1

In this tutorial, i have tried to compile most of the words that a guitarist should know, also commonly known as guitar lingo.
The guitar lingo is made up of weird-sounding words that are unique
to the guitar world, and are most commonly used.

Body

This is also referred to as the sound box. This is the largest guitar part and it comes
in different shapes and sizes. The acoustic guitars usually have a hollow body, while
electric guitars have solid or semi-solid bodies. Acoustic guitars have hollow bodies
because they rely on the body structure for sound resonation. Electric guitars use
electronic pick-ups to amplify the sound.

Headstock
The headstock is the part at the end of the guitar which holds the tuning keys. It is
connected to the neck of the guitar.

Nut
The nut is the piece between the guitar neck and the head. It is a small rod with
indentations to hold the guitar strings in place.

Neck
The neck is the long section which holds the fret board.

Fret board
The fret board is divided into different notes by small metal rods. The number of
frets in a fret board varies depending on the type of guitar and the brand. Modern
electric guitars usually have 22-24 frets in the fret board.

Bridge
It is a part of the guitar’s body and it is important in sound resonance. It gives
some sort of elevation for the guitar strings so they can produce nice vibrations.

Pick-up
 It picks up the
vibrations from the strings and converts these vibrations into electrical impulses.
They are usually found in electric guitars

Capo
This is a device which is attached to the fret board. This thing allows a player to
play the same chord structures but on a different key.

Riff
Guitar riffs pertain to musical pieces which are parts of a song.

Reverb
It is added to the sound of the guitar through an effects box or through amplifiers
to make the sounds a little bit more natural.

Tablature
Guitar tablatures or more commonly known as guitar tabs are written music for
guitars. It is similar to musical pieces (with notes and other musical symbols) but
the notes are translated into guitar frets. It’s a useful tool in learning how to play
the guitar.

Vibrato
It refers to a guitar technique where the string is slightly bended in a fast rate to
make a longer resonating sound.

Arpeggio
This refers to a technique where one takes out notes from a specific chord. He can
then use these to make lead technique or add to the rhythm of the song.

Pick or plectrum
This is the small device which guitar players use in striking the guitar strings. It is
usually made of plastic.

Whammy bar or tremolo
This is an attachment to the bridge of electric guitars which can be used to bend the
pitch of the notes. One can pull the whammy bar to be able to make his guitar
“cry.”

Plucking
It’s a picking technique where a player does not strum the strings all at one but hit
the strings one by one to be able to get a softer and more defined tone.

Palm mute
This is a technique where a player uses his picking hand to
mute the strings while strumming to be able to get a distinct tone. It is very popular
in the punk rock world.

Hammer-on: The technique of playing two or more notes with only one stroke to the string (from a lower to a higher fret).

Pull-off: The contrary of a hammer on. This technique involves the exact contrary motion; playing two or more notes with only one stroke to the string (from a higher to a lower fret).

Bending: The stretching of a string to acquire a higher note; usually the next note in the scale.

Slide: The action of moving from a low note to a higher one (or vice-versa) without removing your finger from the string and only hitting the string once.

Tapping: Technique involving both hands, usually to hit low and high note at super fast speeds.

Shredding: Style of playing characterized by playing notes at a super high speed.

Down Stroke: Right hand movement to hit the string (or strings) from top to bottom only. Used commonly in heavy metal progressions hitting mainly the 6th and 5th strings (when playing power chords).

Up Stroke: Hitting the string (or strings) in an upward motion only. Commonly applied in funk music and when playing chords with the first three strings.

Alternate Picking: The action of hitting each string with alternating upward and downward motions. I would define this motion as one of the most critical for fluent and high speed soloing.

Sweep Picking: This technique involves hitting several consecutive strings with a downward or upward motion. Contrary to alternate picking, strings are hit in a single direction.

Flat: Means that a note is 1/2 (one half) step lower than the original note (or natural note). In other words, one guitar fret lower (towards the head). A double flat note would mean two half steps lower than the original note (or one whole step), the equivalent of two frets lower. The symbol used to represent a flat note is similar to the letter "b".

Sharp: Means that a note 1/2 (one half) step higher than the original note (or natural note). In other words, one guitar fret higher (towards the bridge or pickups). A double sharp note would mean two half steps higher than the original note (or one whole step), the equivalent to two frets higher. The symbol used to represent a sharp note is the number sign "#".

3/4-size guitar
A smaller than normal guitar with shorter strings and less space between frets.
action
A term referring to the height of the strings above the frets and fretboard.

altered and open tunings
The result of changing the tuning of one or more strings from standard EADGBE.
barre chord
From the French term barré. The technique of placing the left hand index finger over two to six strings in the fingering of a chord. The great advantage of using barre chords is that they are "moveable shapes" that can be applied at practically any fret.

Guitar Lesson - Getting Started

Sitting Positions

There are two sitting positions for holding the guitar; classical and casual.
1. Pick up the guitar and make sure that the guitar body is supported by your leg. 2. Position yourself at the edge of your chair. 3. Ensure that your back is relaxed but straight. 4. Lean the guitar back towards you slightly.
Standing Position

1. Pick up the guitar and place the strap over your shoulder. Adjust the strap so that the guitar is positioned mid-body. 2. Use your left hand to support the neck of the guitar. 3. Rest your right hand over the bridge of the guitar.

Hand Positions

Front view and rear view

Fretting

When you play the guitar, you use your left hand fingers to press down the strings on the fret board
of the guitar and use your right hand to pluck or strum the stings at the bridge end of the guitar. Using your left hand to press the strings on the fret board is called fretting. Here are some tips you will need to know:

1. Short fingernails are essential.
2. Use only the tips of your fingers to press the strings.
3. When making a chord, be sure that each fingertip is placed directly behind the fret. We will cover chords in lesson one.
4. Check each string that it rings clearly and is not muted or buzzing.

As a beginner guitarist, it may hurt your fingers to play. This is normal. Every guitarist starts this way for the first couple of weeks. With practice, you will develop guitar fingers (hard skin on your fingertips).

Holding the Pick

Position the pick between thumb and index fingers like in the diagram below:
